Tammy was born and raised in Alameda, California, graduated from Alameda High School, and attended College of Alameda. She worked in homeowners' association and commercial property management for 15 years. During this time she met her husband Jeff through mutual friends and they married in 1997. They have owned and operated All American Tile and Terrazzo for the last 11 years and moved to Brentwood in 2000.
When their son Dominic was two years old, they noticed that he had little speech, had a hard time socializing with other children and was very hyperactive. Thinking he would be diagnosed with ADHD, they were shocked when he was diagnosed with PDD-NOS, an autism spectrum disorder, in 2003. They were told he would need extensive speech therapy and Discreet Trial Reinforcement. At that point, Tammy realized the best thing she could do was to become a stay at home mom to Dominic and their newborn son Owen and become part of Dominic's therapy sessions. After 4 years of in-home therapy, Dominic is now able to verbalize well and is very outgoing and social. Dominic is currently in 3rd grade in a Special Day Class.
Tammy is very involved in Dominic's school, spending many hours helping in his classroom as well as volunteering on several school committees. When Dominic was diagnosed his doctor told the family "good luck" finding services for their son because they lived in East Contra Costa County. Fortunately, they were able to find someone locally to work with Dominic, but the process was stressful and frustrating. That is why Tammy shares The Special Kids' vision and is excited to help make this dream become a reality, so families can find the doctors, services and support systems closer to home.
